    A Beautiful Film

Its better to wander into this film without knowing too much. The performances are all outstanding but the main credit must be handed to the artist behind it all Michelangelo Antonioni. It would have been quite beautiful to have seen this film when it came out, but even after all these years the themes still resonate as true.I don't want to get into the plot too much, but this film is more about feeling. The friction and differences between husband and wife are explored.Antonioni doesn't force anything, he allows a scene to play out in proper time. This film is full of symbolism and despair.

    Antonioni - Cinema Artiste

I just finished viewing this on DVD and I kept thinking - can anyone imagine someone making a picture like this these days?Of course, this film was a product of a time and a place and a sensibility that is now long gone. But be that as it may, this is an excellent film about a married couple who have fallen out of love. OK, no one will be viewing this looking for escapist entertainment. However if you are looking for what the Cinema can do without a blue-screen to enlighten, engross and even (dare I say it) entertain while at the same time shedding some light on human relationships - this film comes highly recommended. Excellent cast too! With his refinement and cinematic artistry, Antonioni was definitely hitting on all cylinders during the early 60's doing stories that would probably raise a loud 'HUH?' at a Hollywood pitch session - then or now. While I don't rate this at quite the same level as L'Aventura, this is up there with the best of his films (IMHO).

Surprisingly watchable for a film about boredom.

Which is indeed what "La Notte" is. Antonioni is at his best here, when dealing with interpersonal relationships, rather than wallowing in his supposedly "new revelations" about left wing politics, as he did in Zabriskie Point, a vastly inferior film. Antonioni was probably the best director ever when it came to depicting the modern European spirit of ennui and alienation in personal and sexual relationships. Contrast his sensitive handling here of Moreau and Mastroianni, as a bored married couple, with the heavy handed misuse of the stereotyped characters in "Eva", an art house entry by Joseph Losey, an expatriate American director who was working in Europe at the same time. The failure of Eva had nothing to do with Losey's nationality; slow moving characterizations of failed, dull relationships just aren't every auteur's strong point. Tellingly, "La Notte" works well with the sound off--the director's midrange shots of Moreau posed against dead, empty walls speak much louder than any words could.

    decent repeat of L'Avventura

Theme-wise,it's a repeat of L'Avventura -a meditative journey on relationship in jeopardy, which is still completely contemporary. By comparison, La Notte lacks landscape variety, unresolved mystery which maintains audience attention, and surprising long takes, all of which enhances the strength of L'Avventura, but still solid enough. Check the intense presence of Vitti while just being on screen.

    masterpiece from the master

    Author: suvakovs from vrbas, srbija

After I watched this great movie for the second time I can say it is a true masterpiece. In comparison with "Le Mepris" by Godard. Lot of the credits should go to Tonino Guerra for the impeccable script. Images, script, actors, everything is superb...

*Exact. Le Mépris est moins bien réalisé et surtout c'est un film en couleur. Pour les inconditionnels de BB dont on voit l'anatomie très ...mucho,super "-<est-ce que tu aimes mes fesses ?-"
