A scene when Prudence locks herself in the closet and has to be serenaded out by the other cast members - is a reference to a real occurrence in 1968 at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India where The Beatles, Mia Farrow, Donovan, and others were studying. Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence, was reclusive and did not leave her living quarters to join the other students, inspiring John Lennon to write the song "Dear Prudence." The film also uses the song as a subtle reference to the fictional Prudence character's reluctance to 'come out of the closet' in relation to her sexual orientation. *
In an interview, Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess said that they were at dinner one day and heard that Ringo Starr would be attending a screening in town. They promptly booked it to the theater and watched their movie with one of the original Beatles. Sturgess then asked Starr what he thought of it. He said he enjoyed it very much. *
Salma Hayek specifically requested to appear in the film. When director Julie Taymor mentioned the role of the Bang Bang Shoot Shoot Nurse, Hayek replied, "Just ONE of the nurses, Julie?"

Sadie, with her fiery red hair and passionate temper, is a reference to Janis Joplin. Sadie is even seen drinking directly from a Jack Daniels bottle during her downward spiral, an action that Janis did regularly with Southern Comfort. Even Janis' throaty singing voice is used by Sadie in the movie. *
Jude's life progression is similar to John Lennon's. As John Lennon did, Jude first lived in Liverpool then soon after that moved to New York City to work as an artist like Lennon. Jude then encounters trouble with the law and is deported (Lennon was arrested as well, but an attempt to deport him failed).

The character of JoJo is a clear reference to Jimi Hendrix. Sadie dresses him up in the purple shirt and bandanna - one of Jimi's most famous stage costumes. JoJo also plays a Fender guitar - the same brand played by his prototype, Jimi Hendrix. *
Bono wears a hat with the word YES written across it in reference to John Lennon and Yoko Ono's first meeting in her art studio, where he found a ladder propped against a white wall. After climbing the ladder at the top he found the word "yes". When he asked Yoko why she smiled and said "would you rather it tell you no?"

When Jude takes inspiration from the bowl of strawberries, he creates a Jackson Pollock-styled "splatter" painting. This seemingly alludes to Stuart Sutcliffe, once a bassist with The Beatles, who was a painter in the Jackson Pollock style. *
Daily Variety reported that the filmmakers had to pay the owners of the rights to the songs of The Beatles, publisher ATV/Sony Music and Michael Jackson, about $10,000,000 for the 30 songs used in the film (roughly $330,000 for each song). As a condition of the songs' use, the advertising posters for the film could not mention The Beatles nor the songwriters' names. However, the owners of the rights to the songs of The Beatles were unable to ban the names of John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the film credits.
The non-existent joint in the "With a Little Help From My Friends" sequence is non-existent to ensure that the movie is not R-rated.

This award goes to one of those movies that accomplishes what movies should do - take us on a journey. Technically, it was difficult to execute, and yet it captured the fluctuating movements of the times it portrayed. It was intelligently and beautifully photographed; it had moments of great emotion and was both though-provoking and inspired. It gave us a refreshing interpretation of music and story through an effective use of iconic songs. And, most of all, it was joyful.

Résumé
1969. Elliot, décorateur d'intérieur à Greenwich Village, traverse une mauvaise passe et doit retourner vivre chez ses parents, dans le nord de l'État de New York, où il tente de reprendre en mains la gestion de leur motel délabré. Menacé de saisie, le père d'Elliot veut incendier le bâtiment sans même en avoir payé l'assurance alors qu'Elliot se demande encore comment il va pouvoir annoncer qu'il est gay...

Alors que la situation est tout simplement catastrophique, il apprend qu'une bourgade voisine refuse finalement d'accueillir un festival de musique hippie. Voyant là une opportunité inespérée, Elliot appelleles producteurs. Trois semaines plus tard, 500 000 personnes envahissent le champ de son voisin et Elliot se retrouve embarqué dans l'aventure qui va changer pour toujours sa vie et celle de toute une génération.

La Critique
Célébrant « un état d'esprit, sans pathos ni larmoiement » (Premiere), Hotel Woodstock voit Ang Lee s'éloigner « de cette verve épique qui était la sienne ces dernières années et se tourne vers un style plus léger, d'une folle drôlerie derrière une certaine forme de mélancolie » (Dvdrama).
Tout comme Filmsactu, le site remarque les qualités de la direction d'acteurs du réalisateur, louant la performance de Demetri Martin, qui « apporte à son personnage une incroyable vérité », ainsi que Liev Schreiber , « renversant », et Imelda Staunton,(la mère) « diaboliquement despotique ».
Télérama salue « l'audace discrète d'Ang Lee [qui] consiste à réduire le grand festival hippie à la seule histoire de ses coulisses », « capté avec virtuosité par le chef opérateur français Éric Gautier » (Libération). « Une comédie modeste, empreinte d'une douce nostalgie et d'une lancinante mélancolie. Humaniste et généreuse », conclut le Nouvel Obs.
Production
C'est à San Francisco où Elliot Tiber et Ang Lee se rencontrent sur un plateau télévisé en 2007 : l'un présente sa promotion de ses mémoires Taking Woodstock : A True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life écrits avec Tom Monte et l'autre, le film Lust, Caution. Le premier lui confie une copie de son livre. Le dernier ayant lu décide de l'adapter en film.
« Il m'a fait un résumé d'une minute de ses mémoires et je me suis dit que si The Ice Storm était une sorte de gueule de bois de l'après-1969, Taking Woodstock serait la superbe nuit qui précède. Par ailleurs, j'avais réalisé six films dramatiques dans la foulée, j'avais besoin d'un bon sujet de comédie, sans cynisme. Pour moi, 1969 et Woodstock représentent les derniers moments d'innocence dans le monde. »
La production Focus Features, dont le réalisateur Ang Lee et le scénariste James Schamus sont producteurs, commence le thème sur Woodstock fin août . Le scénariste adapte évidemment les mémoires d'Elliot Tiber. Quant au réalisateur, il choisit les acteurs. Quelques jours après, les producteurs déplacent les dates du tournages à cause d'une grève des acteurs.
Notes sur la distribution
Ang Lee confie le rôle principal à Demetri Martin, acteur new-yorkais né en 1973, qui, bien qu'inconnu en France, est pourtant célèbre en Outre-atlantique pour ses émissions comme Important things with Demetri Martin. Imelda Staunton et Henry Goodman sont les parents du personnage principal. Jonathan Groff en organisateur de Woodstock Michael Lang. Emile Hirsch, vedette dans Into the Wild, en vétéran de retour du Vietnam. Eugene Levy en Max Yasgur. Liev Schreiber en travesti nommé Vilma. Jeffrey Dean Morgan en Dan, homme marié qui a eu une liaison avec Elliot Tiber. Paul Dano et Kelli Garner en un couple hippie qui assistent au concert.

Presque cinq ans après le film Hulk, Ang Lee retrouve pour la deuxième fois Danny Elfman, complice de Tim Burton.Le titre original Taking Woodstock signifie précisément en français "En envahissant Woodstock".
