    Trivia

Shortly before making the film director Deniz Gamze Ergüven learned she was pregnant. When she informed her lead producer of this fact she told Ergüven that she would no longer be producing the movie and went ahead and informed the other producers, investors and crew members that Ergüven was pregnant and that the movie would be a disaster. Despite this other producers stepped forward and the movie was successfully shot and completed during Ergüven's pregnancy.

Director/writer Deniz Gamze Ergüven met her co-writer Alice Winocour at the Cannes Film Festival's Atelier for beginner film makers where they were the only two women attending the program. Ergüven was there to work on a film entitled "Kings" about the LA riots. After she failed to attract producers and financiers Winocour suggested Ergüven should do a smaller scale movie to prove that she was capable of directing. Together they started working on Mustang (2015).

IN the scene where the grandma opens the wardrobe, a t-shirt with "#direngezi" hashtag on it is seen. The hashtag is the famous motto for the riots which took place when the government wanted to demolish the "Gezi Park" at the central of Taksim Square.

Mustang (2015) is Deniz Gamze Ergüven's first feature-length film.

    Actor/director James Franco's favorite film of 2015. [Indiewire, Nov.19, 2015]

Jury statement: "The writers of this film depict a serious topic with both humour and warmth. It is a touching story of sisterhood, an empowering film that challenges patriarchal oppression with its stale views on female sexuality. Conservative values are placed in opposition to modern society, the life within each of us - and every person's right to their own bodies."
