The movie was originally filmed as two days but was cut and fit to one.

A sign by the register that says "Have a nice daze" shows the logo for Génération rebelle (1993). Rory Cochrane, who plays Lucas, played Slater in Dazed and Confused.
    *
When filming the scene where Warren is running away from the store, his stunt double (Christopher Lee Bennett) ran into the car door so hard that he actually cracked a rib.

    *
The movie was written by a former employee of Tower Records store #166 (Christown Mall) in Phoenix, Arizona. When the film was released and for a long time afterward, a number of her former coworkers still working cited anecdotes and other elements of the film that related to the store. This store closed in early 2005, ten years after the film's release.

    *
A DVD version released in 2003 entitled "Empire Records Remix, the Fan Edition" featured a new edit of the film with scenes never seen before, along with new deleted scenes, special features, and more.
    *
Warren, played by Brendan Sexton III, was supposed to have a sister, but like Tobey Maguire, her scenes and ultimately her character was deleted from the final cut of the film.
    *
When angrily leaving Rex Manning's parting words are "Why don't you all just fade away?" which are lyrics from the song "My Generation" by The Who.
    *
Robin Tunney's character has a horizontal suicide-attempt scar on her wrist. In The Craft, her character has a vertical suicide-attempt scar.
    *
The Alice in Chains painting that appears on the wall of the store and is later sold, is of the cover art from that band's 1990 debut album, 'Facelift'.
    *
When Lucas uncovers the plans for "Music Town" he says "in the immortal words of The Doors, "the time to hesitate is through'", a line from their song "Light My Fire".
    *
The ballet dancer that Mark tries to kiss during Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet" is the daughter of Maxwell Caulfield (Rex Manning).

    *
Robin Tunney shaved her head for her role.
    *
The poster of the lady with a croquet mallet that's hanging behind the register of the shop is from the album cover of "Nursery Cryme" from the band Genesis.

    *
Maxwell Caulfield's character, Rex Manning, was on a TV show titled "The Family Way" in his earlier career. This is the same title of a film in which his current sister-in-law, Hayley Mills, had a starring role.
    *
Debi Mazar had a cameo role as Anthony LaPaglia's date in So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993).
    *
In this film, the love interest of a character played by Liv Tyler is named AJ. In Armageddon (1998), Liv Tyler's character's love interest is also named AJ.
