The movie was filmed at LAPD's Hollywood Division Stationhouse. The police officers seen in the background are not extras, but actual police officers.

The movie clip that Paul Newman and Gene Hackman view briefly toward the end of the film is of a much younger Hackman along with Dabney Coleman from La descente infernale (1969).

This is the only motion picture in which both Paul Newman and James Garner appear.

Theatrical trailer features snippets of scenes not used in the final film, ie. Harry and Capt. Egan having an argument at the police station.

Newman's character has a few similarities with Lew Harper, the private eye played by Newman in Détective privé (1966) and La toile d'araignée (1975). It is quite possible that "Twilight" is meant to be an unofficial end to the saga of Harper. Newman said he liked returning to his old characters, he did it with Eddie Felson in La couleur de l'argent (1986) 25 years after L'arnaqueur (1961) with great success. Lew Harper was the movie version of Lew Archer, the protagonist in Ross MacDonald's famous novels. In "Twilight", Newman plays Harry Ross, which is probably a nod to MacDonald. Gene Hackman played a detective named "Harry Moseby" in La fugue (1975), also based on a P.I. created by Ross MacDonald.

The film's working title was "Magic Hour".
