David « Noodles » Aaronson, au soir de sa vie, revient à New York et se souvient. Il contemple d’un regard dur, désabusé et pourtant apaisé, sa vie manquée,sa jeunesse délinquante dans le Lower East Side, ghetto juif des années 1920, sa bande d’amis et surtout Max, son ami de toujours. Leur ascension dans la pègre grâce au trafic d'alcool.Il se rappelle aussi la violence, la sombre période de la Prohibition, les meurtres, et le projet de casse de la Réserve fédérale des États-Unis qui a causé la mort de ses compagnons. Mais il se souvient également de sa longue relation amoureuse ratée avec Deborah pendant toute sa vie, depuis l'adolescence.

This was a murdered movie, now brought back to life on home video. Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America", which in its intended 227-minute version is an epic poem of violence and greed, was chopped by ninety minutes for U.S. theatrical release into an incomprehensible mess without texture,timing, mood, or sense. The rest of the world saw the original film, which I saw at the Cannes Film Festival. In America, a tragic decision was made.
When the full-length version (now available in cassette form) played at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, I wrote:"Is the film too long? Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that it takes real concentration to understand Leone's story construction, in which everything may or may not be an opium dream, a nightmare, a memory, or a flashback, and that we have to keep track of characters and relationships over fifty years.
