Marlène Jobert was approached for the part of "Lily". She admitted later having hesitated too long because of the nature of the role and, while she was promoting "Le passager de la pluie" (1969) in the U.S., Claude Sautet finally turned to Romy Schneider.

Michel Piccoli was so eager for the leading role of Max he brought Sautet an outfit designed by a tailor, who specialized for plainclothes police officers.

Romy Schneider dubbed her own voice in the German Version of the film, then entitled "Das Mädchen und der Kommissar" (The Girl and the Commissioner).
