Opening film at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival.

Roman Polanski conceived this film several years before he actually made it. He had hoped to cast Jack Nicholson as Captain Red, and himself as The Frog.

As of 2002 the ship "Neptune" from the movie is anchored in the harbor of the Italian city of Genoa (near the "Molo Vecchio"). It has been made a museum and can be visited.

Timothy Dalton was to play the part of Don Alfonso de la Torre before definitively backing out to make himself more available for the next James Bond film.

Damien Thomas was cast at short notice replacing an actor who pulled out.

One of a number of pirate movies made between the mid 1970s and mid 1990s which were a flop at the box-office. The films include Pirates (1987), Barbe d'or et les pirates (1983), Le pirate des Caraïbes (1976), Les pirates de l'île sauvage (1983), Pirate Movie (1982) and L'île aux pirates (1995).

Rob Lowe auditioned for the role of The Frog.

To this day, this film marks the end of close collaboration of director Roman Polanski and composer Philippe Sarde.
